The multiple components of vaccine hesitancy (2024)
Abstract:
Based on biographical interviews with unvaccinated individuals from diverse gender, class, and ethno-racial backgrounds, the article analyzes the multiple reasons that led members of different groups to refuse the COVID-19 vaccines. Beyond the expressed mistrust of messenger RNA or the potential side effects of vaccines, the study explores how relationships to health, medical services, public services, and the government—shaped before the pandemic—fostered various forms of mistrust that contributed to prolonged refusal by some to get the COVID-19 vaccine, despite strong institutional pressures.
